Weapon Mounted Lights vs Free Hand Lights

Im wondering what are the advantages and disadvantages of mounting a light on your weapon vs carrying the light in your free hand. With rifles and shotguns you don't have much of a choice on the matter, it would be really hard and awkward to use a flashlight with a rifle or shotgun if it isn't mounted on the gun itself but since handguns can effectively be used one handed you do have the option of carrying a flashlight in your offhand instead of having it mounted to the handgun.

I would think, one of the main advantages to carrying a flashlight in your offhand instead of having it mounted on your handgun is that you don't have to have the flashlight pointed in the same direction of the gun. When you have a light mounted on your gun its always going to be pointed in the same direction as your gun but when you're carrying your flashlight in your free hand you can point it in all different directions, so I would think carrying a flashlight in your off hand is far more versatile than having it mounted on your handgun. Thoughts?
