What happened to Coronavirus peak daily death predictions?

Several weeks ago scientist were predicting we would level off at around 2,400 deaths in a single day. From there the death rates were suppose to decline.

It is obvious those predictions were wrong as here we are weeks later and the death rates continue to go up.

Is anyone still seeing those types of predictions?

We just experienced our deadliest day with 2,909 people dead in 24 hours.

The U.S. saw 2,909 people die of Covid-19 in 24 hours, according to the data, which was collected as of 4 a.m. ET on Friday.
I do not understand. Death rates continue to go up while people collect in mass groups to protest lockdowns. I suspect in 1 - 3 weeks we are going to see a spike in cases, and in 2 - 5 weeks a spike in deaths.
