I was thinking of a shotgun (to defend myself or my family in the event of the one thing no one wants to have happen...an intruder in my home) and a rifle to learn how to shoot long range. That last time I actually held a weapon, was in the Air Force, over 30 years ago!
There are SO MANY different types and manufacturers, it's like sensory overload. I have budgeted $2500 (total for 2 guns and accessories that I might need). Is this enough?
My goal, with plenty of training and practice of course, is to be able to shoot a 2 liter bottle of water from 300 yards. Is this possible or am I being too unrealistic?
I'm not completely unfamiliar with guns. When I was younger, I was a pretty good marksman and would have kept at it, but in the state I used to live in, gun ownership was pretty frowned upon and the state kept making it harder and harder to own one. I have since moved and now live in a state where gun ownership is not looked down upon and would like to start over again.
As I said, I am a rookie when it comes to firearms. Should I just jump right in with a good long rifle (REM 700, I have been told is a very good rifle) or start with something like a .22 long rifle to get the feel of things? Any suggestions from you would be greatly appreciated. I would like to purchase within the next couple of weeks. There is a range near my home but I haven't been there yet. One last thing, do ranges have instructors that can be hired to teach someone like me how to properly use a gun, or are they just for experienced shooters that already know how to handle weapons?
I want to be prepared for any future disasters that overwhelm the government and I know, that in the end, it's going to be up to me to protect and feed my family and, if it comes to being part of a group, I need to be able to help with defense and do my part. I've already done the easy things: stocking food, med supplies, silver/gold (for bartering, if they are still accepted in the future), etc. But now, I need to do the hard part: buying a gun, learning how to use it, what ammo to stock, how to clean it, etc.
Any help from anyone, would be appreciated. Thanks!
My first firearm purchase...any suggestions?
