Vegan Diet Becoming Illegal

....just in Italy for kids.

I'm not sure if there is a food industry push behind this but it would be nice to think that they are doing it for the right reasons.

Supposedly a few high profile cases of child malnutrition caused by veganism brought this legislation on.

As someone who knows nutrition better than most, I can get behind this statement.

Kids need real milk fat and protein to grow big and strong.

Once someone gets to their mid 20's they no longer have the great need for building blocks for bone and muscle. I could definitely see switching over to a more standard style of vegetarianism once the child becomes an adult. Though biologically they only cease growing long after we legally call people adults.

Those of you raising kids should be careful not to impose adult dietary restrictions on kids, with the sole exception of cutting their sugar/carb intake. Even then only do that if they are becoming overweight. If a kid can burn off those sugar/carb calories without throwing off their BMI then let them munch away. The goal should be to get the child to eat absolutely every food that is nutritionally positive. The wider the diet the better. If the kid keeps demanding apple pie then leverage that with the demand they first finish all their green vegetables. The old cheese sauce on broccoli trick is tried and true. If they insist on hating a particular food then be sure to leverage that demand to make them eat something else they resist. A child's "no-list" of healthy foods should be kept to a handful of items and never to a whole class of foods. A few individual items is fine as loving exception to show you care about their feelings, but never let the kids take control of the diet plan as that can be just as bad as imposing adult diet fads on them.

Making your kids eat a widely varied plate tends to have life long effects. People are less likely to become finicky adults if they ate widely as kids. Widely varied child menus also tend to encourage an exploration spirit in young adults, as food is a gateway to other cultures.

I'd like to think Italy is doing the right thing for the right reasons, but my cynical self thinks there is some food maker protectionist efforts going on behind the scenes. But the end result still may be worth it.

Let your child grow up before trying to turn them into a vegan martyr.
