I see many people here are doing DIY building projects and some of them do not require building permits.
Currently I live in Texas in congested suburban area in regular cookie-cutter house, but would like to move to the East Coast one day, buy some cheap land and build debt-free dwelling.
I am not an experienced builder but did a lot of home projects myself and can slowly build my dream house. First of all, I am looking for a place where I can legally build larger structure without permits.
Any recommendations regarding particular area with more or less friendly regulations? I heard some places allow only 100 sf, some 200 sf without building permits. At least 200 sf will probably be OK if I can put multiple utility sheds in addition to the main building.
I am considering mostly FL, SC, NC, VA, MD, DE and PA. In terms of climate, ideal location will be in FL and SC (easier to survive during winter and spend less on heating). Off grid is not necessary, but I might consider this option too. I have a small business that is transferable to any of these states, but proximity to larger metropolitan areas is important for the business. And also I would like to live closer to the ocean. Is there any chance to build legally without a permit in these states?
Thanks!
