000B vs #4B range test

I used to live on isolated big acreage in the mountains where I kept my HD shotgun loaded with 000B for bears and bad guys. However, after moving to a Texas subdivision I wanted a HD shotgun load that would be effective indoors but less dangerous to my close neighbors.

I tested 000B vs #4B at the range a few days ago. The result: at 15 yards (maximum indoors distance for most homes) #4B out of an 18" 12ga with no choke gave me full 12"-14" upper torso patterns of twenty-seven 25cal pellets. 000B, on the other hand, kept all eight 36 cal pellets in a tight 6"-7" group. And even though both loads were 2 3/4" full power loads the 000B for some reason kicked twice as hard as the #4B.

Bottom line: #4B is much more likely to hit fast moving close range targets because of its much wider pattern and softer recoil while posing far less danger to the neighbors due to less penetration of exterior walls by its smaller lighter pellets.
