I do not take my freedoms lightly, as I know they were won and have been defended by the blood of brace men and women in uniform. True patriots.
I felt terrible that a day meant to honor all of you has been overshadowed with the ugliness of the aftermath of this election. I know that the first amendment protects all freedom of speech, no matter how whiney and ludicrous, but I can't imagine how it pains you to know what you have up to have to listen to this.
This morning I went to my kids' elementary school for the monthly Flag Ceremony that has been a tradition for decades. My second grader and his class served breakfast to local veterans prior to the ceremony. An uncle of mine and some other veteran family members attended that and then stayed for the assembly, as it was to honor veterans.
The flags were presented and the pledge recited, veterans in attendance were recognized and applauded.
The 5th grade class then made the presentation of a check for just over $900 to our local Honor Flight organization, as that was what they chose for their service project (this is a k-8 school with a few hundred kids, so $900 is a big accomplishment!)
Then the second graders presented a program outlining many of the sacrifices veterans and their families make, the honor and virtues they display and earnestly thanking them for their service (my second grader and I spent a good half hour when he was practicing discussing his few sentences and what it meant and why it was all so very important)
It concluded with another heartfelt thank you from the entire student body.
When we started the assembly, my uncle and I were discussing the election and reactions a bit with disappointment and really a bit of dejection with us being uneducated bigots from flyover country and all.
As we were leaving, I thanked my uncle for coming (my second grader is in awe of knowing and being related to a real life hero, so he was so excited for him to come). My uncle, with his eyes just a bit moist, thanked me for inviting them and told me that this morning gave him hope for our future.
I could not think of a better gift for him, and all of you.
There IS hope for our future. WE, the men and women here, are raising strong, respectful kids that understand honor and the importance of hard work and character. They are learning about our Republic, they are being taught to value our freedoms. Know your efforts have not been in vain, and there are second graders out there right now that will some day take over where you left off in defending the freedoms of this great nation.
I have rambled on into the day after Veterans Day now LOL, but again, THANK YOU.
