Taurus PT1911

My understanding is also that the Taurus 1911's are pretty good. I've never owned one, but have had three of the RIA's. They're another pretty good budget option. Mine were all reliable.
You're also in the Metro Arms/ATI/Llama price point too. But with the way prices have fallen, you could get a Remington for around $450 after MIR.

Shop around, there are deals to be had nowadays.
