22WMR vs 38 special

Any longarm platform but assume the 38 special is factory ammo in 20" barrel( aka not full house 357 mag loads).

The 38 has more punch, but the 22WMR gets further out there. For SHTF, hunting, putting food on the table, shooting baddies, and use in a pistol as needed. As a pure hypothetical your choice is?
