Which Mexican Cruise?

We are going to book a Cruise for this spring. We are looking at either 1) 7 Night Mexican Rivera which stops in Puerto Vallarta, Cabo and Matzatlan I think. OR 2) A Night Cruise to Baja Calif which stops at Encinada and Catalina Island.

The Mexican Riviera is over twice as much money. It is on the Carnival Splendor.

The Baja California cruise is less than half the cost off the other (as mentioned ) It is on the Carnival Inspiration.

We have 6 kids ages 4 to 17. If we do the Baja Cruise we will probably fit in a stop at Universal Studios before coming home. We haven't ever been on a cruise before. Which would you lean toward and why? We can't do a Caribean cruise due to airfare cost of 8 people. Same issue with Mexico all inclusive resort options...though they do look fun.
