I live in a small town, who's biggest problem is a small city of 70K 30 miles away.
The only saving grace is that in those 30 miles is a steep mountain pass and no main roads save for the highway connecting my valley with the city. (There are of course a couple dirt back roads over the mountains that 4x4s could make it through on)
On this road is an animal overpass, an artificial hill built over the road with a tunnel going thought it. There are 10 foot high game fences on both sides for miles along the road meant to keep animals off the road and funnel them to the overpass.
It is my plan in a 'zombie' style SHTF to jacknife a tractor trailer with a 6,000 gallon water tank in that tunnel and drop the tank across both lanes of the highway. As this is in the middle of a pass with steep hills on both sides plus the game fence there is no easy way around it even on foot.
A few snipers up on those hills could drop rounds down on anyone trying to clear the road block.
No doubt individual people could break through but it would keep the tens of thousands of potentials from coming through.
Now, best case scenario the community bands together and deploys a few dozen fighters to the pass. One lane could be left open and the place run like a roadblock as the overpass would make a fantastic fighting position as it overlooks the road and could be easily fortified. With a real organized force in place the valley could be sealed off indefinitely from most traffic.
But worse case, nobody bands together, I alone could block the road for vehicle traffic for some time, at least until or unless heavy tow trucks are deployed to clear the trailer. Its not a perfect barrier, but even unmanned I think it could create an impassible traffic jam to keep the worst of the city at bay.
Do others have plans to close off the highways in your area? Maybe bridges that can be taken out, etc?
