Signifigance of the number of prongs ona pitch fork

Hi, just wondering what the signifigance of the number of prongs ona pitch fork.

I've seen 3 prong pitch forks, 4 prong etc.. 7 and 8 prong.

Why are there different numbers of prongs???

I'm studying a pitchfork for my museum studies right now that I need to remediate the rust from or stabilize anyway... just trying to understand better what I am dealing with and how it was used etc.. its an oppourtunity to learn more about farming tools too.. especially ones that are from before mechanization.

Looks like this but may have a prong or two extra and they may be closer together.

also it isn't a metal peg attachment it is a circlet that goes around a wooden pole but the pole aint there just wood remnant.
