Suggested rifle choice for first rifle purchase?

American (Oklahoma), looking to buy possibly an AR-15, AK47, or something similar. Hopefully not too vague in this post and apologies if it was answered previously. I love the look of the AK but feel like it may not be the most efficient bang for my buck. Just wanted others' inputs.

Intended max price I'm willing to spend: ~$1200
Preferably less but willing to vary in reason. I have shot rifles plenty of times , other guns before just never bought and want to make a good choice. Want to add a few minor attachments possibly (red dot, maybe something else). Curious to any suggestions? About to join National Guard so I'll get more practice in BCT, etc., anyways thanks everyone hope everyone is prospering
