The Problem With Absolutes

I've heard it said many times that without God there are no absolutes. I'd like to explore the pros and cons of this sentiment. First the cons as I suspect most of this thread will be delving into the pros.

The philosopher Ayn Rand has a piece called, "The Problem With Absolutes" in defense of them. She lists 3 axioms that are undeniable absolutes:

  1. Existence exists.
  2. Identity exists.
  3. Consciousness exists.
Clearly, this list of absolutes is on the metaphysical level. To clarify the statement I've heard many times is that without God there are no moral absolutes. The ultimate moral standard is life itself. Isn't that a basis of absolute moral action without God?

To stay within forum rules, I cannot expound on what Ayn Rand puts forth as the only right, with all others merely being a corollary or consequences of this basic right. Feel free to research that or PM me. She states the ONLY manifestation of this basic right is property rights, where the first property we own is ourselves (not shying away from aversions to slavery). Tying these 2 points together, the moral absolute without God is also life.

Of course, with or without God, people are free to violate others, to sin and deal with the consequences of their choices. So, what is the problem with absolutes without God? The pro? I've given a lot of thought lately to Psalm 82:1 lately.
