I decided to see what the fuss was all about, so I ordered one of these fidget spinners when Amazon had it on sale for $3:

The center has a decent roller bearing, and if you pop the plastic covers off it exposes the open bearing. Then I was practicing my fire-starting techniques the other day, and I had an idea - what if I used the fidget spinner as a socket/handhold for a bow drill fire starter? I carved the top of my spindle so it fit snugly into the center of the bearing (after popping the plastic covers off), used the 3 wings of the fidget spinner for a grip, and it turns out that it works quite well. The low friction of the roller bearing helps reduce the amount of effort necessary to start a fire.

I'm not suggesting this as a primary means of fire starting, but given how common fidget spinners are these days it might help out if you need to start a fire in a hurry.
