Sand rail as prepping vehicle?

A few years ago I inherited a 1963 based VW sandrail project. It was started by my father in law but never finished and he decided that he probably would never find the time so he gave me what he had, which included a rebuilt engine, partial frame and a truckload of other parts.

It took me a year but I eventually got it mostly finished. Its pretty fun but I'm never really sure if its actually good for anything and I'm one of those people that needs to find a practical use for stuff in order to feel good about keeping it and investing in it.

The only real thing left to do on the buggy is make it street legal, which is about $500 more stuff and who knows how much insurance. Something that would help me sell myself (and my wife) on the idea is if I could justify it as a good prep.

The problems are rather obvious however. It only has two seats, no protection from the weather, not a huge amount of storage or carrying capacity. Its only two wheel drive...its seems hard to justify putting money into as a prep compared to say, putting money into one of the subarus etc.

But...it LOOKS like it a post apocalyptic vehicle, I can drop the engine without a hoist in about fifteen minutes, a person could rebuild it in a day, it only weighs about 900lbs...I don't know....any ideas of a practical POW role for this or is it just a toy?

And no...I don't have any sand dunes nearby, although it does pretty good in the snow with chains. Front end only has about 200lbs of weight on it and I have independent left and right brakes so I can lock one wheel and turn it on a dime.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
