I'm thinking about building a off-road enclosed trailer and would like to install a solar power kit in it. I tried to search for kits but didn't get very far. Has anyone bought a kit and where did you get it at? I would like to charge my cellphone, battery charger, outdoor lights, hot water heater and a shower. |
They are ussually pricey for what you get, and are not much in the way of performance.
As far as charging a cellphone, charge batteries, a few outdoor LAD lights, you should be ok with most kits of 150 watts or more.
The thing to keep in mind here is that the 100-150 watt kits are intended for small loads. Powering a water heater is a no go with a small setup. Heck, even with a large, home based array, heating water is not recommended due to the large wattage required. It will pull your batteries down right quick.
I might suggest you do a bit of research and put together your own system from individual components tailored to your load requirements.
If you are just looking for a cheap starter kit to learn about solar, by all means, find a kit to play with, but you should not expect great results, or product longevity. While the supplied PV solar panel may hold up, the charge controller and inter-connectors may not hold up as well as better made name brand units.
In any event, I fully encourage you to get a setup to play with.
I think you will be pleased with the ability to charge batteries with the sun.
Quiet power.
There are a few posts already addressing this here on the forum.
May I suggest you attempt to use the search function.
I believe others had posted some info on kits they bought and used.
A good place to start is the Northern Arizona Wind & Sun website.
They have lots of info on their site as well as a solar forum website of their own which is very informative and lots of good folks there.

By the way, there is a cheap water pump on sale right now (limited time) at Electronic Goldmine. Nice little pump to fit your needs for a low power shower pump.
Best wishes with your endeavor.
