As Leadcounsel said, they must offer their salute first as all junior ranks do to superior officers. The superior officer is supposed to recognize the respect offered by returning the salute.
Trump wasn't in the military, but basic protocol was drilled into him at military school in his youth.
Because of that early training he realizes his basic obligations to those that serve in the military.
If he does little in the way of grand military designs he will at least insist his troops get fed properly, paid on time, and have the funds to train with.
I remember back in the Reagan days the Marines tried to save money by insisting no second portions at the chow halls. When Reagan heard about it he went off big time and insisted that unless a Marine was overweight that they be allowed to eat as much as each felt they needed to get full. Actually, I'm told it was one of the rare occasions he cussed about something. Reagan had his fair share of screwups in office too, but that one act by him to hammer the generals trying to pinch pennies made every enlisted Marine think of Reagan as the man they would march into hell for.
It's these small things that truly endear a foot slogger to his POTUS.
