Gaming headphones for multi-use (gaming, music, phone calls, etc.)?

My activities include playing a game on my phone or computer (occasionally), music, and phone calls. I'm about to start a new job working from home so I anticipate being on an increased number of phone calls and web video calls, and I want a better solution to any of the headphone/mic combos I currently own. Are gaming headphones a good "swiss army knife" choice for all of these audio uses?
