I can't speak for my own situation as that is opsec however, I suggest you just build up your food supply as you are able with low cost long term storage items. Some very easy things to get are staples like rice, flour, sugar, powdered milk etc.. Mormom's are really good for basic stockpiling especially if you have LDS store in your area.
Over the years, I went through various preps where I would get gear and try out that gear. To be honest though I've found myself splitting in two regarding preps.
Realistically most of the preps you need are food and water most everything else is extra to make things easier.
In various scenarios there are chances for injuries etc.. each of those are situational. As you research each scenario you may add various items into your go bag / bob or to your shelter area for a shelter in place scenario, or to your vehicle for get home type situation or bug out vehicle type situation.
I've invested a lot of time into just learning some basic household skills for upkeep and repair. I studied a bit of history for more premodern techs and methods. I'm no expert.
I think having a toolkit can go a long way to help keep things running. Learning about water management, and energy generation can help as well as having the tools for that.
Clothing is the other big thing after food and water. If you are not in a permanent shelter having the right clothes for where you are goes a hell of a long way, that includes proper footware.
I think smart phones are great, don't cheap out on sensors. Having a good multiband radio can help too especially if it has am or fm or am/fm.
Its a whole book to really go into it but for your house I would suggest bleach and baking soda. Having garbage bags can help.
You know if you are bugging in, have materials that will keep your house operational or your apartment or whatever.
Water storage can be built up over time.
All the extras will be developed as you learn about those issues and events.
time frames to build up from
24 hours, 48 hours 72 hours (easy) government gives handouts on this stuff
two weeks (this is still pretty basic) - but you will need more of the 72 hour stuff. and localized inputs based on expected social issues that could occur in your area in that time frame.
mid term (up to six months) stockpile some bulk food item staples, bulk store some water. have stuff to stop things like leaks non emergency medical supplies for common injuries that you would go to hospital for otherwise. way more considerations.
LONG TERM - do your research. you might as well start looking for a farm or compound in the mountains while you are at it.
just bear in mind the highest security government shelters the public knows about do not shelter beyond the midterm scenario and they were built for nuclear war.
Also the 2 week timeframe is extreme for most regional issues as most major disasters you will be evacuated if logistics supply is untenable for humanitarian needs.
In event of national or global catastrophy, essentially if you want it, prep it.
A well rounded prepping strategy is to prep for a loss of gasoline (petrochemicals) and electricity and water and food for as long as you can for as little as you can. stockpiling is not safe stockpiling. know you need proper storage facilities to keep the stuff prime.
if the government doesn't have a strategic reserve for it, you should.
If it does you should put a higher priority in your prepping strategy for when the govs strategic reserve runs out.
luckily with a global economy we are very well insulated from shortages.. .there is just fluctuation on price based on supply availability global loss of commonidities is unlikely without a moonshot bizzaro accident or cosmic intervention.
Like we are very well insulated except from those highly unlikely doomsday issues that could happening theoretically.
however we have very real unavoidable issues on the planet that are exponential problems that will creep up as the years pass.
climate change, environmental damages resulting, loss of fresh water supply without desalination, human maltheusian effect etc...
Also I am expecting a recession by late 2019 to set in globally (I could be wrong though so don't bank on it) Funny Buffer is buying TBills Russia is selling them, and I am thinking it is not out of the question that China will dump its US TBills if things get bad enough with US trade, a very small part of their economy but substantial in that it represents their growth rate. If you want to see economic chaos keep an eye out for if china fails to renew TBill holdings. That is a big sign you should look for.

Priorities and duration. How long do you prep for and why?
