Millennials complaining: Boomers taking all the jobs

Interesting article from USA Today, about how Americans aged 55 and older accounted for more than half of all employment gains in 2018:

Some highlights:

Of the 2.9 million new jobs last year, 1.4 million were taken by people 55 and older

Many older people simply want to work longer

The workforce in general is aging. And employers in general are having a tough time finding qualified workers in general.

AARP Vice President Susan Weinstock says older workers bring soft skills “gained over a lifetime of work, like calm under the pressure, ability to solve complex problems, ability to listen and be empathetic. These are uniquely human skills that a computer or a robot can’t replace.”

However, one group is not happy about this trend:

Ruining the lives of future generations may sound extreme, but according to a new poll, 51% of millennials beset with big college loans, two wars and uncertain future work blame Boomers.

As someone who is 64, I am glad that employers still want to hire someone like me.

And as for the claim that "older people lack the ability to learn new skills"--all I can say is that I've seen many older workers learn things quite well.

For myself, I've been in the IT field for 20 years. The last two years I have started a new career in predictive maintenance technologies for industry.

Are we working too long? Should we be retiring to make room for the younger set? What do others think? Thoughts? Opinions?

Let's block ads! (Why?)
