Any EMTs or Paramedics here?

Talk me out of getting into EMS work....

Been looking for a career change in the next year or so and have really been thinking about getting my EMT cert and eventually going FT...

My plan would be to get my cert this Fall and do a few months of volunteering before I try to go FT and quit my current job.

First off, I know that the pay is crap. BUT its about what I make now and for a guy like me its more or less what I am going to make with my current skillset anyway... Though where I live in the PNW we seem to have higher wages for EMS than most other places in the country.

If I do this, and its something that I take a liking to I would plan on going back to school and getting my Paramedic degree.

I figure at this point in life I can walk onto any job in my current field without any trouble.... but also at my age I have one career change left in me.

So...

By the time I will have my EMT cert I will be 39.
Seriously, am I too old for this?
Are providers going to be interested in hiring a guy my age or is this a young man's game?

Any other thoughts? Cautions?
