From what I saw, data was not affected. I could not call out or text for about 3 hours today but I could email and surf the webs (not on WiFi). The first thing I thought when I saw the outage map linked in the previous post was that there are two possibilities. This is a test run, someone out there knows how to put a hurt on the networks. That or a solar event.
I'm not a freque freek, so I can't say for sure but multiple carriers over a huge geographic area? I know cell companies share some towers and equipment so it makes me think that it wasn't a specific carrier that was attacked, it was hardware in the field or the network that carries that hardware's signal to the carrier. Then again, some folks didn't notice the outage so,could it have been an attack on individual devices spread by network equipment?
