CA soon-to-be 1st gun owner questions

I am beginning the research for developing an off-grid property at some point in the future. For hunting & protection purposes, i obviously will need to be purchasing a couple of firearms. I am not interested in amassing a big collection. As an SUL backpacker, i am fond of lightweight multi-use gear. I am encountering a lot of info & not sure what actually applies (especially, in light of recent executive orders). Here are my initial concerns & related questions upon attempting to order my first rifle online.

1. As one option, I like the versatility of the Chiappa X-Caliber survival rifle (especially in a SHTF scenario). Anyone have any experience with this rifle?

2. I know there would be background check concerns & whatnot. Upon trying to order it online (& being a first-time firearm buyer), the seller came back saying i would need a(n) FFL. I am not a dealer & have no desire to be. Why would they suggest i need this particular license before they can ship to me?

3. It also came up that CA requires a(n) FSC. What are all of the legal steps/courses/licenses do i actually need before AND after purchasing a firearm?

Thanks, in advance, for all of your help!
