Home Firing Range

I'm a relative newbie to firearms.

I want to get better fast, but I can't find the time to drive to the local firing range as often as I would like. My sister is more experienced with guns, but also can't get to the range as much as she'd like.

I'm looking for suggestions for making a SAFE outdoor firing range at the back of my property. The land back there is steep, rocky, and heavily wooded. One thing I am uncompromising about is seeing where my bullet is going, so just shooting at a target without a backstop (like a lot of my neighbors seem to do) is not an option. I live far enough out of town that shooting is legal (The local sheriff deputies were pleased to learn that my sister and I are armed and licensed to carry.) but there are still people in sight on two sides.

Whatever I do will have to be relatively cheap and have minimal impact on the land. (I briefly considered having someone come in and dig out a high bank like they have at the firing range, but I ruled that out on both counts mentioned above.)

My sister's boyfriend suggested old railroad ties, but I don't know where to get any.

Currently the guns we'd be shooting are a couple of .380 automatics, a .40 auto, a .45 auto, a .380 revolver and a .22 rifle. I plan on getting a heavier caliber rifle eventually, but for now these are the ones I need to work with.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
