refinishing a sword?

so i have this bastard sword, about a 32-33" blade, 10" grip, based on a museum piece.. high carbon steel blade, holds a razor edge, full tang, you know, a real sword, but it wasnt very expensive of a sword, the grip is just cheap leather (maybe even pleather) wrapped over a light wood, and the scabbard is definitely pleather with a metal collor at the opening that actually aids to dull the blade

problem is, it got rust on it, the blade is ok, the pommel and crossguard has some pitting, and the grip and scabbard is.. well, theyre crap.. so out of boredom and looking for a project, im considering refinishing the metal and doing an all new grip.. i may cerakote the pommel and crossguard to protect from further corrosion and hide the pitting, and maybe do some kind of a stacked grip, possibly leather, horn, G10, kind of like the grip on a kabar knife

anyone ever make these sword of upgrades on a sword? what do you think some good options are for refinishing and rebuilding it?
