Just a thought. Input?

So as an extra class license holder, I'm always toying with comm ideas and sometimes I even try them out! My latest hair brained idea has to do with 11m SSB. I tuned in to 27.385 LSB on my FT-857D and listened for a day or so. In that time I heard one side of a QSO VERY clearly at about S7 with an S1 noise floor. The guy didn't mention his location but he did say that he was talking on a Yaesu 1000mp. Hey! That's illegal! I thought.

Yes it is illegal but it got me thinking. I would like to have the ability to work 11m SSB if I want or need to but I would also like to stay within the limits of the law so as not to jeopardize my license. Please do not let this turn into a "Nobody cares about 11m and you won't get in trouble if you're careful" thread. I will operate within the rules, period!

Anyway, here is my thinking. Most CBs have very little control over the quality of the AF output aside from the clarifier control. After years of using my Kenwood TS-850SAT, I can make this rig absolutely sing with notch filtering, slope tuning, etc. Why don't I just get a good T/R switch and use the 850 to listen and a Uniden Bearcat 980SSB to talk?

What do you all think? Am I crazy or does this sound like a reasonable idea?

Let's block ads! (Why?)
