Should a premium firearm function with cheap ammo?

I was reading a ballistics article last eve and the author made the comment, "You wouldn't put 87 gas in a Ferrari, would you?" and it got me thinking ... should a premium firearm function with inexpensive ammo? I'm not talking about damaged, out-of-spec, etc. ammo, just low end ammo. There are an infinite number of personal experiences with firearms that are finicky as to diet, but hypothetically, if I spend X on a premium handgun or long gun, shouldn't I expect to have it function flawlessly no matter what I feed it? Not for competition, but for everyday usage ... Again, I'm talking premium as in higher end ... say a $1,500+ handgun or a $1,500-2K+ long gun. I'm curious what folks think as we are collectively preparing for sundry adverse scenarios ... if I had the coin to drop on a Wilson Combat 1911, and I was forced to bug out with a few mags of Gold Dots and some boxes of Tula, I'd hope that the Tula would cycle with 100% certainty.

Or is it more a case of a Ferrari not being able to/expected to run on 87?

Thoughts? Feel free to vote accordingly.
