Cars and Prepping

Last weekend, I had the brakes on my car fixed. I had previously gotten the front half done at a local chain in the city where I live in Oct. 2016. Checked to see if they were under warranty and no. The only thing this particular chain guarantees is the brake pads. I can tell you the brake pads were fine. They weren't grinding. Car was vibrating, which meant it was the rotor. The local place wanted to charge over $1,000, but they kept insisting that literally the entire front half needed to be redone -- in less than 2 years. So either they had used totally cheap parts, or weren't being honest. The place in the small town my parents live charged $600 and guaranteed the whole repair job for 2 years. Drove home Wed. and it was fine. I walked to work Thursday & Friday because the weather was darn near perfect, so I didn't even look at the car until Saturday.

Fast forward to yesterday. Was going to do a bunch of things, but the car wouldn't start. Tried to get it jumped. Turned out, it was the starter.

Parents are coming Wed. to help me get it fixed, as the usual car repair place isn't able to get through the 6'4" clearance in the apartment building. So until then, I won't be able to go grocery shopping or do any errands. A bunch of laundry did get done yesterday. Good thing I have my preps. You never know what life will throw at you.

Getting to work will be fine since I can walk there. It's just everything else has to be waited for. Yeah, one can always order pizza in a pinch, but I'm trying to save my cash and eat healthy. And yes, one can order groceries online these days, but they do usually still take a couple of days to arrive, and I have found that ordering fresh stuff online like produce generally isn't worth it, even if you do pick it up at the store. Could also walk to one grocery store if needed, but it's not needed.

This is now the second time in 5 years that preps have come in handy. The last time was when I sprained my knee. No way was I going to be able to stand up and cook from scratch that weekend. Always have some canned food in your pantry. You just never know when you might need it. That and it never hurts to get second opinions, even on things like car repairs.
