Menace? China / Russia

The sabre rattlers love to speculate on whether China or Russia would lob a few nukes at USA.

POPULATION
Russia: 146 million people.
China : 1,439 million people.
... and Russia's birthrate is tanking.

Methinks that Russia, a vastly underpopulated land, is more at risk from Chinese takeover, than any controversy with the USA.
Likewise, unless the USA signs a mutual defense pact with Russia, China has no need to keep the USA from intervening.

On the other hand, perhaps this situation may hasten an accord to build a bridge or tunnel across the Bering Strait, linking Russia with North America. That might be very interesting - especially if we can link our power grids.
Having the ability to shunt excess night time capacity to other users would be very frugal and efficient.
And a rail link (HSR?) might ameliorate the lack of ice free ports, when it comes to international trade.
