Distance is good. Less likely to have rocks and mololovs reach what you’re protecting, and it makes it harder for the bad guys to surround you, they end up spread out more, or they have to concentrate at one point to gain numerical superiority, and your response time inside the perimeter is quicker than that of those outside.
Edited to add...you HAVE to maintain the perimeter, if a small group is out on that perimeter and a break through occurs, that small element can easily be surrounded, unless they know how to properly operate in a retrograde fashion. All I know is, if that occurs, there will be news.
