Virus are incomplete beings. They have no space for a thermal regulation system. They rely on their hosts for that job.

So they die off outside of a host. In air that takes a while. Water changes temp a lot faster.

Temperate regions that have significant temp differences between night and day are brutal on viruses in water.

Places in the tundra and tropics will have water locations that stay a constant temp for most of the day.

So it matter where you are if viral water threats are a major concern.
