I have loaded my 1858 with birdshot, works great for soft targets. I did have some back spray off of a oak plank. And i was using a equal parts load of shot. I have also taken rabbit and opossum with just the round ball from about 50 ft. But the rifling in the barrel throws shot in a very wide pattern ,so unless you like 5-7 ft away its not a good idea.
remington 1863 on small game?
