Today, we think if we don't have a Glock, CZ, or other wonder gun of the month, we're gonna die. But I don't remember anyone getting killed in D.C. with what today would be considered a full size firearm. The guns I remember on the street when I was a teenager were little .25 autos and some .32's, and a handful of .22's like old low cost Iver Johnsons and Harrington Richardsons, and a few RG's. Lots of .25's. The little cheap .25's seems to be everywhere, with one brand, an old Italian Gallesai or something like that being ubiquitous. If you got something like one of those little Brownings or Berreta's you were really cool.
These days, I read some of the forums and the little guns are scorned, and people make comments like, "it's just gonna **** someone off." I can't help but wonder how ,many gun people today ever shot someone or saw someone shot first hand. The two ex cops who gave the course we had to take here in Texas to qualify to get out CCW, made comments like you need a minimum of 9mm or .38 special to defend yourself.
When I was 16, I saw a guy killed on our street. The guy, Allen, had a serious problem with this younger kid and bullied him. The kid went and got a gun, a little .25 auto, and when Allen went to mess with him, the kid pulled the gun. Told Allen to back off and leave him alone. Allen didn't think the kid had the guts to pull the trigger, but he was wrong. The kid shot once, hit Allen right in the chest from a few yards away, and dropped him right there. Allen died almost immediately. That little nickel plated .25 auto killed 6 foot Allen dead on the spot.
When I mentioned this to the ex-cops giving the CCw class, he scoffed and said it must have been an un-lucky day for Allen. I thought it was kind of a dumb attitude but it's his opinion. I don't understand that mentality of disregarding any gun less than what some gun magazines have said is the minimum gun to use.
I wonder if there's too many people with too much money that has been spoiled by having the best, so they disregard the lesser stuff that some poorer people use. I've seen people killed with cheap .22 revolvers in street fights or crimes. But that was the 1960's, so I guess times have moved on. Now it seems like if you are not armed enough to fight the TET officesive, you're not ready for a street fight. After the coke wars of the 1980's, most the guys on the street went for the 9mm. It became the new status symbol to have a '9' in your belt.
I'll always remember being a kid in D.C.and seeing the tough guys with .32's and nobody messed with them. I guess today, they would be laughed at.
People have got spoiled.
Are we spoiled?
