SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. — An Inwood, W.Va., man was shot in the arm early Wednesday after he broke into his ex-girlfriend's apartment near Shepherd University, the Jefferson County (W.Va.) Sheriff's Department said.

Harold Marsh, 48, was taken to the hospital and treated for his wound before he was charged with burglary and wanton endangerment with a firearm, according to a sheriff's department news release.

He was being held Wednesday at Eastern Regional Jail near Martinsburg, W.Va., on a $100,000 bond.

Jefferson County Sheriff Pete Dougherty said deputies were called Wednesday at about 3:30 a.m. for a report of a burglary in progress on Hensel Drive in the University Heights apartment complex.

While authorities were responding to the scene, they found out that there was an armed intruder and a gunshot had been fired. When officers arrived, Marsh was found in the stairwell with a bullet wound on his arm.

Dougherty said Marsh was armed with an assault-style rifle and a small-caliber handgun when he kicked in the door of his ex-girlfriend's apartment.

He said some residents confronted Marsh and wrestled the rifle away, but the pistol discharged during the struggle and the bullet struck him in the arm.

The sheriff said another man suffered minor injuries.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Shepherdstown and Shepherd University police departments.

Shaver was shot by an elderly homeowner while he and two others forced their way into the man's home and were trying to rob him using a realistic-looking pellet gun.
