Going to rural and urban India, any advice?

First make sure your Hep-A, Cholera and Typhoid vaccinations are up to date.

If arriving in India via another country you may need proof of Yellow Fever vaccination. If arriving direct from the US , there is no Yellow fever in India, so you don't need the proof of vaccination unless you have recently been in a country at risk for it.

Bring or obtain a mosquito net for your bed. Both malaria and zika are prevalent in India.

Bring your own portable toilet. Lots of poop bags and ton's of baby wipes, and hand sanitizer enough to share with all your new found friends who don't have indoor plumbing.

If you haven't been there before I would also bring menthol ointment to put under your nose so that you don't throw up from the shock of stepping into the world's largest latrine.

Also highly recommended that you bring Lomotil or atropine sulphate for dysentery, and a good quality personal water filter if you will be in rural areas.

India is the only country I know of which requires persons running for public office to prove that their house has a toilet.
