Thoughts on knife selection

In parts of the world where the people live close to the wilderness, you tend to see large knives.

For example, a Tramontina Machete from South America, or my Hmoong knife from Laos. Its a 12" blade, one tool option that they use for doing just about *Everything*.

However, in western countries, it seems most fixed blades are only 5 or 6 inches. Then heavier tasks are done with a small axe (which to me seems to large and clumsy for most tasks asked of it). Additionally, a folding saw is also very popular.

Why is this?
