Why?

If you don't know about the Dunning-Kruger effect look it up, it's pretty enlightening.

In short. Ignorant or unintellegent people live in a small world, mentally, and can't see beyond that world. They are very intellegent based on their view of their world so they can't/won't acknowledge the universe outside.
Intellegent people also live in their own world but understand there is a vast universe and their knowledge is only a fraction of what can be known.
