Useless ammo can locks

After buying 50 cal & 40 cal ammo cans for storage and using the lid locks sold online
and viewing threads for DIY locks, I have arrived at the conclusion that such lid locks are totally useless against anybody except maybe some very, very young children.

They are waste of money and time (not the ammo cans, just the locks).

Any of the locking schemes, whether you buy them or the DIY kind, can be defeated in less than a minute with the proper tools available in almost any home and surely any home that is buying ammo cans. Without the tools to do it really fast, a simple metal file will defeat the locks although it will take a more time.

To defeat the locks simply use a power hand drill and a metal cutoff wheel. You don't have to cut off the top of the can, simply cut the thick wire holding the lid down, you know the wire attached to the flip down latch.

Cut on both sides and the lid is totally free and the contents of the can readily available.

With the power tool and cut off wheel, the operation can be done in less than a minute, probably as little as 30 seconds if your're in a hurry. A simple metal file will work also, but take more time.

It's kind of like defeating a door lock by removing the hinge pins except you don't have to be on the inside.

So, my advice, forget the locking products for ammo cans or the more expensive DIY one which negates the sealing capability of the can. They are both useless.
