It depends on what your shooting it through. Beretta 92's for instance where designed for it. I don't think I would run it through a glock or some other design without a fully supported chamber. You could have a blow out, which while not a disaster is not really what you want.
As for excessive wear....its just physics. Drive anything harder and faster and it will wear out faster. Just depends on if you need or want it to run that hard or fast. It will wear out in proportion to how hard its used.
