He was probably more worried about passing the Army's new physical fitness test, and also meeting height/weight standards... both of which he would be required to do in order to attend the War College. Then, assuming he did pass, spending the next year working his ass off in order to graduate from that school.
On the other hand, he can take his retirement now and move on to something else. He's probably already in talks with some publisher for a book deal, plus being courted for an "analyst" position with some cable news network (CNN).
