Feather sticks not so easy

So I tried making feather sticks today out of dead oak wood. Turns out it's not so easy. I used a BK2 and later a Fiskars X7 hatchet and Mora knife. I find that I don't care for the BK2 as a field knife. The hatchet and Mora are razor sharp, yet even with them, I couldn't make the feathers, though I could shave off small, paper thin chips which flew everywhere. Anyway, despite this I succeeded in getting a fire going in my backyard.

As for the fire, I used the furry stuff from a cabbage palm which grows in my front yard as tinder and dead saw palm from the backyard which grows in and around the big oak tree. I dug a small fire pit in the ground and made my fire. I made two fires and though I failed to properly feed the first, I was successful with the second, though I killed it by filling in the hole because I was afraid someone would call the fire dept because it was smoking heavily.

I used a Bear Grylls ferro rod, the original, and I find I don't care for it much either. Though I did get a magnesium block in the mail today along with a 40 oz Klean Kanteen. I guess I'll see how it works tomorrow.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
