ISO Container Safety

Hi,

I am just preparing a workshop of Occupational Health and Safety in working with Sea-Container cargo, and I ended up reading your postings on this forum.

Here are some points to pay attention to when dealing with used ISO containers:

1. As we don´t know their freight history we don´t know about possible fumigation residuals, IMDG spils etc. therefore you should consider changing the wooden parts before spending longer times in a container.

2. If you are going to wash a container be aware that there might be some residuals reacting with moisture; like aluminiumphosphide used for fumigation. This reaction can turn the container air lethal.

3. The paints used in containers are not always as human friendly what we might think about. For this reason it might be a good idea to use stainless steel coated inner materials, as used in containers meant for alimentary transportation.

4. In case you got worried and consider about all the work done already, there is also an existing market for measuring the container air for defining wheather the air is ok. This is though a bit challenging as the technology isn´t capable of supporting us properly in this topic, although the work is on the way.

5. In case you measure the amounts of different gases inside a container, then you think about making it properly.

6. Aeration of container always before entering is a good beginning for safety and increasing the ventilation is also recommended when spending more time in the container.

Enjoy the DIY, so do I...
