Calais migrant camp finished

Today, the 5000+ migrants, occupying a carton and tent hellhole near the English Channel in France, the vast majority of them military aged young men, are to be relocated at reception centres in France, 150 miles away from the Channel location they have occupied since 2001. Riot police across Europe have arrive, and the evacuation starts at 8:00 a.m. French time (GMT+1).

They ALL want to be in England, and have been a disastrous source of disruption and danger for roads and ferries, and for themselves. Reporters interviewing them in recent days hear that they will not leave peacefully, and already there has been tear gas fired into crowds attempting to break out of the now tightly cordoned off areas of camp and the immediate vicinity.

One small ray of hope is that some of them really are lining up to be processed, then board busses to be taken to new housing. Said new housing far enough away to make return difficult, in addition to being enclosed with fencing and wire, patrolled and controlled much like a prison.

It will be safer in Calais now. I regularly travel by road between Romania and Home in England - four to six trips each year. I gave up on taking the Calais to Dover route across the channel, as it simply did not feel safe for a woman travelling alone, and Dunkirk to Dover offered much better security with no foot passengers on the ferries. Calais/Dover is better by road for my travels, but I was well put off by little collections of young men walking along the French, German and Belgium motorways, dancing into the traffic lanes, waving fists and obscene gestures at me. I drive a Jeep Cherokee, so it's a good vehicle, but I'm 67 years old, often travel alone, and just not prepared to take on a group of louts so obviously intent on doing harm. Some western news programmes have done their best to portray these invaders as poor, sad family groups, heavy laden with small children and carrying pitiful amounts of possessions. Don't you buy that for a second! Been there, seen it, and never once clapped eyes on a woman or child. These invaders are wearing nice jeans and shoes, good jackets appropriate for the season, with rucksacks and telephones glued to their ears. They are angry young men with a mission, and they frighten me silly. No way do I want them in England!!!!!

So they're cleaning out the tent camp. ABOUT TIME!!

It's going to be a long day in Calais.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
