I want to start a little discussion about the difficulty of friction fire making. I consider myself a pretty skilled outdoorsman, but, frankly, I've had no luck in creating a fire from friction. I've tried this about five times over the years, and while I was able to make an awful lot of smoke, I've never achieved the ember necessary to form a fire. I'm talking about bow-drills, specifically.
I know what I've done wrong. In the early days, I was going from manuals, and I didn't understand the necessity of cutting a notch in the board, allowing a place for the hot sootiness to accumulate. Later, when I understood the physical principles better, my choice of woods was poorly suited to the task. The act itself is physically exhausting, and being out-of-breath and then inhaling a lung full of smoke doesn't help.
Making fire without a fire-creating device seems, to me, to be one of the most important survival / bushcraft skills. I'm going to tackle it again this week, I hope, for the first time in several years. Resources available on YouTube these days make troubleshooting much easier.
Has anyone else had frustrating experiences with friction fires? Has anyone gotten it the very first try? I'm keen to know your experiences.
