Geologists have found a new fault line under the San Francisco Bay

It could produce a 7.4 quake, effecting 7.5 million people. "It also turns out that major transportation, gas, water and electrical lines cross this fault. So when it goes, it's going to be absolutely disastrous".

This is an unusually unpleasant turn of events. Basically the two faults were once thought to be separated, and expectations were sort of centered around that outcome, but now we know that there is no gap and an event is more of an inevitability now, rather than just another thing that can happen.

A major event on the West Coast would create a domino effect beyond belief.
