Weird background interference on AM channels

Over the past 6 months or so, I have heard a rhythmic background pattern of clicks, beeps and tones on weak AM stations. This occurs with different stations on different radios in different locations, whether on my office desk Tivoli in Denver Metro or the stock SUV radio in the Sandhills of Nebraska. Anybody else notice this?
