Shotgun or rifle.

Ok, I am ready to buy either a shotgun or a rifle for defending outside the house. Any shots will be within a hundred yards. Most likely 50.
Before any of you suggest an AR-15 style rifle, I can't buy one here. Not legal.
My options seem to be either a Ruger mini, or an sks.
So, either 10 rounds of 7.62x39 or .223, or 6 to 9 shells. I hate living here in Connecticut, but I can't leave here, at the moment.

I would like to hear what you guys think.
And, please, no "get both!" replies. If I could, I wouldn't be typing all this!
