Shelf-life data on canned bread, butter, and cheese.

Just ran across this info on a German canned bread site--it's usually hard to get any firm info on true shelf life of these products. Their numbers pretty much match with my experience, though. I've had canned German bread around for 7 or 8 years. It tasted a tiny bit drier maybe than when it was new, but perfectly tasty and totally edible still.

Ditto on canned cheese and butter--I've had butter and cheese both in storage for 8 years and still good other than a couple of cheese cans that got dented. The seals were no longer perfect, and the cheese in those had dried out and gone a bit off.

(Dang, I knew it was worth going to the trouble to get my hands on some of that stuff. )

Canned cheese laboratory-tested absolutely fine at 7 years.

Butter laboratory verified for 5 years (and likely good for longer).
And anything in a can sold in this country that doesn't have a "best by" date, like that canned butter, has been proven to have a shelf life of more than 5 years.

And the 2-year dating on canned food? Apparently, the real problem is that the can makers won't guarantee their cans for longer than that, and the food processors don't feel safe guaranteeing the food without a can guarantee.

So basically, if the can looks good and the contents look good, you can expect to get 10 years out of all these under decent storage conditions. It's what I've always thought, but nice to get some confirmation.
