How can the US military be so powerful yet can't stop ISIS?

Yep, it will require boots on the ground, door to door fighting, to root out all of the ISIS fighters. Bombing them from the air does kill some, but still doesn't get rid of them. Attrition can go on forever. Assad may not be a dictator that Obama wanted to get rid of, but he wasn't causing any trouble with his neighbors. Almost all of Muslim countries are ran by dictators, kings, or such. If they are friendly with the west, and aren't threatening their neighbors, they should be left alone. This was America's policy for years after WWII. Bush W decided to depose Sadam Hussen but this required occupying the country for around 20 years until the got a stable government. Not what Obama did. Bush shouldn't have deposed him, and Obama shouldn't have got out too soon. We occupied Germany and Japan for 10 years, then allowed them to have a government, but we still had and have troops there.

We should stay out of middle eastern wars unless they pose an immediate threat to us or an ally of ours. If we fight, fight to win, and get out ASAP.

Reagan bombing Libya in the 1980's kept Kadafi at bay for 30 years until Obama had him deposed, now Libya is ran by war lords with no central government in control, (hence the travel ban). Same with Yemen, Iraq, Syria, and Sudan. Iran is a threat, so all of these countries either have no central govenment in total control of their countries, or are threating others, thus the travel ban. Makes complete sense.

Clinton and Bush sr, had Iraq bombed and their military basically destroyed, hence they really no longer posed a threat to their neighbors. Yes, he had to be bombed occationally.

But, ISIS is another problem. No central government, in multiple countries, especially Iraq and Syria. They way I see it, we need to team with Russia. We need boots on the ground in Iraq and push west while Russia in Syria pushes east. Get Turkey to seal their northern border, as well and Jordan and Arabia to seal the south, then squeeze them out.

Iraq probably needs to be divided into three countries, Kurds in the north, Sunis in the center, and Sheites in the south, since they have a problem working together.
